So how are things today?

Unknown Speaker 1:04 Things are awesome. Robert, thank you so much for having me.

Robert Plank 1:07 I'm glad that you're on. And you know what this song, so this whole subject, like the whole, you know, like the mindset and get myself in a flow state. I mean, I've heard a lot of that stuff. And I've, I do as much of it as I, as I remember to do like, you know, having that quiet time waking up early and going on walks and, and taking out the negative self talk and all that stuff. But so and not the whole area of you know, getting your head on straight, I guess like what makes you stand out? What makes you different special?

Speaker 2 1:37 Yeah, that's a great question. It's so funny. I actually just spoke to, um, I had a consultation today, not not too long before. I'm speaking to you now. And she asked me a similar question. And I laugh because I think a lot of people might shy away from that, you know, because she even said, she said, you know, Eva, Laura, she said, I don't want to offend you. She said, but there's so many life coaches out there. And there's so many people who say they're doing his work, like, why would I work with you? Like what, you know, like, what makes you different than everybody else? You know, very similar to the question you just asked, and, you know, one of the things that I like to share with people is just a little bit about who I am. Um, because I think once you get clear about who I am, and where I've been and where I am now, you understand that there's only one Eva, Laura. And, you know, for me, my background is actually in psychology and social work. So this is what I actually went to school for, it's kind of, it's not a fly by night thing where it was just like, oh, you know what, this seems really cool. You know, let me do this, or everybody's a coach now. So let me become a coach. But I actually got my bachelor's degree in psychology and my master's degree in social work from Howard University in Washington, DC. And this was something that I actually always wanted to do. I went to school because I knew that I wanted to do counseling. But what happened for me is after I got my, my master's degree, I ended up working, I was a program director at an outpatient mental health clinic. And for all intensive purposes, you know, most people will say that I was doing really well, I had just gotten married, I had a really good job. And particularly in the social work field, I was making very good money. And I literally live like right down the street from my house. So if anybody is in the Washington, DC area, you know how bad traffic is, or any major city, traffic is terrible. I live down the street from my house, so I could walk to work, which is huge. So things were you know, relatively good, at least on the outside. Um, but on the inside, I was actually I was I was miserable. I found myself very depressed, I found myself I'm not happy at all feeling like, I can't believe I worked so hard in it, like, is this all there is to life, like, is this what I'm going to be doing for the rest of my life. And I found myself feeling like instead of actually helping people to, you know, to grow and helping them to be better people and, you know, helping them to live the life that they wanted to live. I was just helping people to maintain their dysfunction. I felt like I was not making an impact at all. And that was not okay for me. I, you know, for me, it was all about how can I help this world be better? How can I help people be better, you know, it was really kind of like pie in the sky. Like, you know, I want to help everybody feel better. Um, that was always my goal, but I didn't feel like I was doing it there. So I found myself suffering. And I got to the point where I just kind of I just got sick and tired of being sick and tired. I think we've all been there at some point in our lives where you just kind of say Enough already like this is, you know, I've been I've been trying to do the best that I can with what I got right now. But this just isn't gonna work. So somehow, someway, I'm gonna have to change. Oh, yeah, I can totally relate to that. Yeah, like we've all been through that it might not be a job, but it might be a relationship. It might be, you know, just with yourself personally, it might be with your health, whatever, but some aspect of your life you like, you know what, no, I'm done. This is it. somes got to give. And I got to that point. But the problem was, I didn't know what to do. I didn't know like, if I should get another job, I just I didn't know what to do. I felt trapped. And I ended up going on this retreat. So while then I speak at a lot of retreats now. So it's so funny anytime I go to a treat now. But I ended up going to this retreat. And I've got back to soulful self care, as I call it. I've got back to doing meditation and doing yoga, and just spending time in nature and, and just taking some time out for me, I had not been doing that. And when that happened, I literally you could say that I had a little bit of a breakdown, I had a mini breakdown where I just you know, I found myself on my hands and knees crying and just praying to God and saying, oh my god, you got to get me out of this. I don't know what to do. I can't I can't go on like this, you know, God, if I if I keep living like this, I'm going to be a client and my outpatient mental health clinic and that's just no good for anybody. And I felt better, you know, after you have a you know, good cry, and, you know, you're praying and all of that I felt better. And then I realized that, oh, God, I'm have to go back to work on Monday.

Speaker 2 6:36 And that just kind of zapped all of that. But I went back to work. And um, you know, I got back on Monday morning and my boss calls me into his office, and he fires me. Out of the blue, no warning, I was shocked and you're talking about like, I'm you know, type a perfectionist overachiever, I had never been fired from anything in my life. And and I just could not believe that I was fired from my job. And, you know, at first I was, you know, upset, clearly, I was upset. But then you know, something happened where you know, kind of spirit kind of kicked in and said, Eva, Laura, what's wrong with you? Why are you upset? This is what you prayed for? This is what you want it. So what are you going to do? And so I found myself in this position of Yeah, like, what am I going to? Do I have a choice to make? Am I going to, you know, go the easy path, am I going to just go back and get another job in social work? Because again, I had a master's degree is not difficult at all to get another job. So am I going to just go there, you know, the way that I thought that I was supposed to go the way that everybody would go? Or am I going to carve out my own path and do the work that I've always wanted to do. And I chose the ladder. I chose the ladder. And I took six months for myself, I took six months and I did the work, I got the coaching. So all the things that I talk about, I always tell my clients like I don't tell you all to do anything that I haven't done, or that I would not do personally, I did the work I took time out. And um, you know, and during that six month period, I opened up a valores Healing Center. And that was a little over 11 years ago. I have not looked back since then.

Robert Plank 8:22 Um, that's an awesome story. And there's so many little, little goodies in there. And I mean, I think that one thing that sort of sticks out for me, as you were, as you were like saying about all these things happening, it's kind of interesting that you were already sort of on the on the edge of burnout there and then you did you retreat, and then and then you got fired. And it's like all those things. It sounds like it happened in the best possible series of events that it could have happened, right? Because like it may be if you had been fired earlier or later, maybe you would have like thought oh, no, what am I going to do? And because you were able to do the Go go away and do the yoga and the spa thing you were kind of like, almost like ready for that that one little push to to go and pursue what you wanted to pursue?

Speaker 2 9:03 Oh, it absolutely happened in the way that it was supposed to happen. No question. But of course, when you're going through things, you don't feel like that. Right? Like, why is this happening to me? I can't believe this. But you're absolutely right, know that it was the best possible way. And that's why I embraced it. Even though it was difficult because I didn't have a plan. You know, a lot of people that I work with who are interested in entrepreneurship they have they have a plan, they're thinking about it, they work, they're working their nine to five and it's a blower, okay, I want help transitioning, you know, into being a full time entrepreneur. They have that time and space. I didn't have that I didn't know anything about being an entrepreneur. I just kind of got thrust out there. And I had to like sink or swim.

Robert Plank 9:48 And so when you were thrust out there in the sink or sink or swim mode, I mean, what sort of things did you have to overcome in that short span of time?

Speaker 2 9:57 Yeah, and it was a short span of time. I had to, I really had to do the personal work first. And this is something, you know that I highly, highly recommend for all entrepreneurs, because I think what happens is, we focus so much on our craft, that we lose ourself. But for me, I had to focus on myself first, who am I? Why am I here? Why am I starting a business? What is the impact that I want to make? How, how do I want to change lives? You know, why am I doing this? Kind of like, Why me versus somebody else. So I had to do all that internal work first, I had to really get clear with myself first. And then once I did that, then I could figure out, okay, this is the kind of business that I want, because I wanted a business that was reflective of my lifestyle, I, you know, I didn't want something initially, when I started doing this, I thought that I was going to manage different healers and different, you know, coaches and counselors and, you know, have this whole big thing, where we offer different healing modalities, and I was the manager of all of that, and then I realized it's able or you don't want to do that, you just got out of managing people. And you know, just the type of person that I am, I'm a very free spirit. So I knew I would not want to be tied down or attached to something, I wanted something where I could, wherever I am, I can go and see clients. But that was from doing all the internal work of figuring out who I am. And then I could figure out a business model that works for me and for my clients.

Robert Plank 11:31 So what exactly goes into that, that taking stock? Or whatever of who you are? Like? Is it a matter of like, putting things into categories? Or asking yourself the right questions? I mean, like, what's the method to the madness? As far as figuring out yourself first?

Speaker 2 11:47 Great question for me, you know, I had guides, and that's what I always recommend. For everyone else, I actually wrote a book bliss, which which talks about how to, you know, live a life of passion and purpose and pleasure and and how to, you know, figure out your purpose, and then also monetize that as well, you know, but I always believe is best to have guides and doing that, because there are just certain things that you just can't see about yourself, you just can't know, you can have the steps, I can say, Robert, do this do that, you know, this is first, this is a second. But it's very difficult when you're trying to do it on your own. And there are things about yourself that you simply can't see, or you're just not going to tap into. Because you just don't go deep enough. Or, you know, you might be afraid of it or you just you know, you kind of you're not going to push yourself as hard as somebody else is going to push you. So, I always recommend having somebody, there are questions that you absolutely can ask yourself. But a lot of times what I find is that when people ask themselves, their questions, they don't get to the heart of the matter, they kind of stay, they kind of stay on the surface. So a lot

Robert Plank 12:59 of sense, right? They don't they don't dive deep into the painful stuff.

Speaker 2 13:02 Exactly. Exactly. And that's, and that's where the goodies are not like the painful stuff. That's where the magic is like that is where you find where your true purpose is. And what's gonna separate you from everybody else.

Robert Plank 13:17 So can you give me a, like an example of that maybe either of like yourself, or when you when you do your coaching or stuff like that? I mean, what are some of the, the the scary goodies in there that that you discover?

Speaker 2 13:31 Yeah, so you know, and again, I've done this personally, but even for my clients, um, so a lot of times, it's so interesting, like, even when I'm talking to my clients, maybe even the first session, you know, a lot of times it's like, okay, so what is it that you want to do? Why are we here? What is your goal? And one of the biggest things that I find is that they don't even really have clarity. They're not even really sure they kind of have this concept or this idea, but it's like a show. It's, it's, there's no heart to it. And a lot of times, what I find is that when I asked them about themselves, just questions, you know, so just tell me about yourself. Tell me about your journey. Why are you even passionate about let's say, it's baking cookies? Why do you even want to bake cookies? You know, why do you want to sell cookies? Why are your cookies gonna be better than anybody else's? And then it might, you know, go to childhood stuff. Well, you know, my mother used to bake cookies. And, you know, she was never really around for me. But that was the one way that we connected is when she made cookies for me. You know, so that that's kind of that painful stuff that Oh, wow. You know, my mom wasn't there. She wasn't the mother that I wanted. But I felt connected to her when she made cookies. And that's why I'm so passionate about cookies.

Robert Plank 14:47 Interesting. So so it's like you're you're uncovering the real reason why they even got started in the first place. Yes, absolutely. And I've been hearing that a lot from like, different, you know, like mindset coaches and people like that. Just that, you know, like a lot of people like there's like, If only I knew, like the questions but didn't have the answers, that will be one thing. But one thing, one recurring thing I'm hearing over and over from different people is like, well, if I had the questions, but not the answers, at least I'd be part of the way there. But a lot of people don't even know the questions that they should be asking, or maybe they're even asking the wrong questions.

Speaker 2 15:21 And that's what it is. It's not even, you can have the questions because again, I do this for a living, I had the questions, but I couldn't do it for myself, you know, people bring things out of you that you can't bring out of yourself. You know, and sometimes it's a very intuitive process to like, I can have a list of questions. But then there's something that you say, and the way that you say it, and maybe it sounds like you're on the verge of tears, or maybe you kind of pause and take a deep breath. And I know that that's what we need to talk about.

Robert Plank 15:55 So, so you talk to the people and you talk to you feel them out, and you get to the good stuff, and maybe throughout the course of like one or two calls, then something will sort of hit home or there's something that you will pick up on. And then what sort of solutions do you offer people? I mean, it's just, it's just a matter of like, like, like a talk therapy? Or do you give them different assignments? Or? Or like, you know, what are some of the solutions that you have for people who have these problems,

Speaker 2 16:24 all of the above all of the above. And it really depends on what the problem is, you know, what, you know what, what's different in terms of my background is my background is in counseling. And I'm also a certified life coach and spiritual counselor. So for me, it's, it's a combination of things. It's not a one or the other. I don't believe that traditional counseling alone works. And I don't believe a lot of times that life coaching alone works, because a lot of times people who say they want life coaching really need counseling, and people who need it who say they want counseling, need life coaching. So I really believe that the combination of the two is the best. And but you need somebody who knows how to facilitate and go back and forth between the two, and know what's going to work best in your situation. Because sometimes you spend enough time in your story, you need to get past that. And then that's where the coaching comes in, and the assignments to help you to be able to move forward. Or sometimes you just haven't gone deep enough. You know, I know people who've done counseling, and they just haven't gotten to the heart of things, they're still feeling stuck, because they never went deep enough. So now they really need hope they need counseling to kind of bring that up. And then we can go into the coaching mode of once we are clear, once we know once we have that, aha, now here's the work, here's the assignments to flesh that out and to continue to move forward.

Robert Plank 17:49 And that's kind of interesting, because I mean, it's one thing to say that, you know, have a different tool for a different job. But it but the way that you're sort of explain this, it sounds like Well, somebody might need, you know, this one tool to get from point A to point B, but they might need to switch gears and get to use some other tool to get from point B to point C.

Speaker 2 18:06 Yes, a lot of times I find that there's a step that you know that people have missed. You're absolutely right, you know, like a client that I'm working with now. And a lot of people that I work with, this is not new for them, they you know, they have been to the retreats, they've read the self help books, they've done the Deepak Chopra, meditation, like they've done all of this stuff, they've gotten coaching, but they're still finding themselves like April or I've collected a bunch of stuff. But I'm still missing something like something just is not jiving for me. Or I kind of made it to this place, but I plateaued and I'm trying to get to the next step.

Robert Plank 18:47 Interesting. And what I'm sort of hearing too is that maybe they have some book smarts, but not some not street smarts, where maybe they read up on all the, you know, like the the breathing exercises, or the Yoker the yoga or the Reiki or whatever there is, and they know all the facts and figures, but like, What good are the facts and figures if you don't have that coach who's helping you through it?

Speaker 2 19:08 Absolutely. And you got to have that, you know, and this is one thing that I'm so passionate about. And that is implementation. You have to implement, you have to take action is not enough to read is not enough to go to the retreat, and to have that that you know that spiritual high when you get there and then you come back home, and you end up doing the same things that you've always done, you have to implement. And really the only way to implement is daily consistent action, looking at what can you start to do on a daily basis, little things that you can do on a daily basis that are going to make a change for you.

Robert Plank 19:47 So could you give us some examples of that? I mean, I know that we just said that, you know, there's different different solutions for different people but just kind of off the top of your head. I mean, what are some like like quick examples of those daily action that people could try.

Speaker 2 20:01 So we could let's talk about meditation because that's something that works for everyone. You know, no matter what you're experiencing in life, whether, you know, there, there are things that you absolutely know that you need to heal through with his childhood traumas and hurts whether you, I've already done all that work, I'm good, you know, I'm in my business, my life is great, but I want to keep it here. And I want to maintain meditation is good for wherever you are in the spectrum of things. So one of the things that I always say about that is a lot of times one people don't know how to meditate properly. So even if you, let's say, do Deepak Chopra, where it's, you know, free for a month or something like that, it kind of goes right into a meditation, but it never teaches you how to actually meditate. So just even taking the step to learn how to actually meditate, how to breathe correctly, what is the correct posture, you know, what works best for you, for instance, um, you know, people said, well, Abel, or I don't have time in the morning to meditate. And I was told that that's when I need to meditate. So if you don't have time, if that doesn't work for you, take some time out in the afternoon, take some time out in the evening, what is it that's going to work for you. And if you don't have 30 minutes a day to meditate, take five minutes out here in the afternoon, and maybe five minutes out at night. So those kinds of things where you can kind of play with it, not do what everybody is telling you that you should do, but doing what's gonna work for you. That's what I call that soul for self care. But you have to do the work to figure out what is actually going to be best for you, instead of just going by this book, or this pamphlet or whatever, you know, what somebody told you and say, Well, this is the way that it has to be done. And if that I'm not doing it this way, it doesn't work. No, it just means you need a different way for you. So now we need to change it up a bit, switch it up a bit, and see, okay, let's try this meditation. Maybe you didn't like that, that Transcendental Meditation, try this guided meditation over here. And instead of 30 minutes, do it for five minutes and do it at this time versus that time.

Robert Plank 22:08 And I like that advice. I like that way of thinking, especially because a lot of people might be in a situation where, like you said, maybe they tried it one time, or maybe they tried one person's way of doing it. And maybe they didn't dive deeper into the like the subcategories of meditation to figure out what works best for their schedule, and their lifestyle and their personality and all that good stuff. And that's, that's pretty reassuring to me, too. Because it also sounds like the way that you're describing this, that people can sort of go at their own pace that they can, if they want to jump right in and do all this crazy stuff to change your life, if they're back in your corner, sort of like the way that that you were and things had to change they can. But then also, if they just want to sort of sort of keep things on the right track, or they want to transition into more mindfulness and more self care. It sounds like they can just try out some meditation. And if it works, they can they can move into into more areas. Is that right?

Speaker 2 23:04 Absolutely, absolutely. But it's, there's no right or wrong approach. It's what is right for you, or what is wrong for you. And, and that and that's really where the work comes in to establish that. Because if you start to do something, and you notice, let's just say, you know, changing in eating, right, like, we all know how we're supposed to eat. We all know that, you know, we should eat more fruits and vegetables, if you're a meat eater, you want to eat, you know, clean me, you know, like we all know this stuff, you know, eat organic if you possibly can, but a lot of times we just don't do it. Because what happens is we're we have a certain way that maybe we like to eat baby, we like a lot of sugar, maybe we like a lot of meat, we like a lot of processed foods. And instead of saying, Okay, let me make one change over here you go from one extreme to the other, you know, so now is the time, you know, the holiday seasons are coming up. And you know, everybody's gonna be talking about the first of the year and I got to lose weight, and I got to detox. And so you go from, you know, this really unhealthy eating habits to now I'm just going to get rid of everything. And I'm gonna just do smoothies or I'm gonna be a vegetarian or vegan, whatever. And that's not practical, you have to take baby steps. Now for some people, maybe they need to go from one extreme to the other to kind of reset themselves. But then once you do that, you have to actually now find something that you're going to be able to maintain because you're not going to be able to maintain the extreme. And then some people were gonna say no, I can't go from one extreme to the next. So let me just okay, I'm still gonna eat me. I'm still gonna eat, you know, processed foods, but let me just focus on adding more vegetables every day. Now that I got more vegetables in my diet every day, let me now add more fruits. And so they're just gonna baby step their way in.

Robert Plank 24:57 And that's interesting and that relates to When, when you were talking about how you do your coaching, you feel people out then that that's why you sort of get a feel for the person first, and then you know how to tackle whatever problem and that's, and that might be why a lot of people are getting hung up on. Like we said before, they're getting hung up on the details from following this book or this course or this program, when if they had just had someone sort of adapt the strategy to their personality, it would have worked out.

Speaker 2 25:27 That's exactly it. You are exactly right. And that's the missing link. And that's what that information can't tell you. It can't tell you about you

Robert Plank 25:38 write I mean, that makes a lot of sense. And so sort of along those lines, since you know, information is good, but it has its limitations. And, and you sound like an awesome life coach, among other things. So could you tell us about your that book, you mentioned earlier bliss, and some of your other coaching and services and stuff like that?

Speaker 2 25:56 Yeah, so I actually have two books. My first book is called power. And it's really all about what do you do when you're in that dark place. So just like that place where I describe, you know, where I was literally, in this dark space of, I don't know what to do with myself. Um, I don't know what my next steps are, I just don't I don't know what to do. And so it's all about how do you reclaim your power and operate from a place of faith and get out of that place of fear? So that's what power was about. And then once you get out of that space, okay, now, how do you stay in it and elevate? So bliss then is all about how do you live a life of passion and purpose? And pleasure? So how do you get to that next level? And again, and it's really all my journey, that's what I had to do, I had to get from this dark place. And then when I did, it was like, Okay, now how do I live the life that I've always wanted to live, but I couldn't figure out how. So those are my books. And then you know, you I work a lot with people one on one, I do a lot of group work, I do a lot of speaking. Like I said, this year, I've spoken at a lot of retreats, I have a meditation, audio, download, as well as a workbook as well, that teaches you step by step how to meditate and takes you through a guided meditation. And actually, I just spoke to somebody today, she said, Eva, Laura, I've been trying to meditate for years, and I've done different things. And she said, You were the only one whatever that meditation experience that you took me through was the only one that actually helped me to relax and feel what everybody was telling me that I should feel in a meditation. I could never get it. Just uh, now I finally understand what they were talking about.

Robert Plank 27:31 Awesome. And it's cool. Yeah, I mean, it's and it must be a pretty good, boost the ego, right? Like, if if this person had tried all these different, you know, methods and coaches, and it didn't work, and then she came to you, you must be thinking, I got I got something good. Here, I have the magic power.

Speaker 2 27:49 You know, I don't even feel like that. I just, I feel really blessed. You know, and I and I just always remember those days where I was feeling so stuck. And I just think about, like, what if I allow fear to take over and I just stayed working a nine to five that I absolutely hate it. You know, like, what if I did that all of these experiences that I'm having with people where I really am making an impact, and I'm really getting to help them in meaningful ways. And they're changing their lives. Like, I never would have had that experience if I stayed stuck in fear and didn't venture off into, you know, really the unknown because you know, when you start a business, you really don't, it's a lot of unknowns, you don't know what's gonna happen, you don't know how you're gonna pay your bills, you don't know if you're gonna have any clients and customers you just don't know. So it's just a beautiful experience to know that I did the right thing and I'm making the impact that I always wanted to make.

Robert Plank 28:43 Awesome. And I can totally relate to that too. Like I think I think sometimes about you know, what if I hadn't gone for or what if whatever events hadn't pushed me into the path that I'm on now what if I had stayed in the nine to five job as well and I mean, I might still be there and not even know that there's a problem I might even just be kind of just miss miserable a lot and just barely keeping on and not even knowing that there was a better way and it sounds like this, you know, this awakening that you went through and this sort of being pushed out of one life and into another seems like has got you in a pretty cool position to help a lot of people and so you mentioned so you have these books power and bliss and where can people find those books?

Speaker 2 29:27 You can go to my website at Abel Laura a V as in Victor a la you are a Eva laura.com And you can connect with me on social media. I am Google Licious. There's only one Eva Laura so you put an AVI a la you're gonna find me I'm gonna pop up like hey,

Robert Plank 29:47 awesome. And they can find your the information about your your coaching and your speaking and all that stuff from that Google Search to

Speaker 2 29:55 yes, you can find everything on my website and I'm putting out I'm very active on social media. So when you connect with me on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, I post things all the time.

Robert Plank 30:06 Cool. So they find you in one place, and they'll get the other stuff. Yeah, exactly. Awesome. Well, I think that, you know, like, as we talked about this, this sort of subject, I think that it's kind of scary for some people. And even some listeners might think that this is sort of an off topic conversation. But I think that, as far as you know, entrepreneurship goes and building a business and dealing with the self doubt and the frustration, I think this is probably the number one most important thing for everyone to not only talk about, but think of and get past those blocks. And I think that you know, everything that you said today was super awesome, and I really appreciate you hopping on. So thanks so much Ava lore for telling us about all these ways that you've improved your life, and you've improved other people's lives. And I hope that everyone goes and jumps and grabs the power book and the blissbook and checks out you and your website and your coaching. So thanks so much for stopping by.
