1289: How Big Is Your BUT?: Hack Your Mind and Break Free from Emotional Blocks with Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist Rene Brent

Rene Brent on Mindset and Hypnotherapy

Rene Brent covers Mindset and Hypnotherapy in this Marketer of the Day episode. Rene Brent explains how clinical hypnotherapy helps people feel calmer and sleep better by changing subconscious patterns. Many clients feel "stuck" despite success, pushed by an inner critic that says good is never enough. She describes hypnosis as a natural shift in brain waves that quiets the analytical filter, giving access to the 95% subconscious rather than the 5% conscious mind. With strong rapport, she acts like a "garage door opener" so clients can face the issue and choose what to keep or release. Since the body sends roughly 10x more signals to the brain, a few minutes of stillness can prevent 2-3 a.m. worry spirals.

Feeling stuck isn’t just frustrating—it’s exhausting. The same thoughts cycle through your mind, keeping you awake at night and making even small progress feel impossible. It’s not that change isn’t possible, but when old habits and beliefs have been running the show for so long, breaking free feels overwhelming. The key isn’t in forcing a new mindset overnight but in disrupting the patterns that have kept you in the same place for too long.

Rene Brent is a certified clinical hypnotherapist. She is the author of How Big is Your But and Breaking the Worry Agreement, with another book in progress titled Happiness Lives in the Gray. Rene has over a decade of experience helping professionals overcome emotional barriers. Based in Florida, she specializes in subconscious reprogramming to drive personal transformation. Today, she shares insights on using hypnotherapy to break emotional patterns, set morning intentions, and improve mental wellness through better sleep. Stay tuned!

Robert Plank 0:04 Hey, we're here, and Rene Brent is back. It has been eight years, and we're here to help some people and educate about the healing power of hypnotherapy and mindset work. Because if you're the kind of person that if you would choose some things in life, and you're the boss in some areas, but not in the boss of your emotions, and you say, I know I could be happier. I just need some help getting there. Then this is exactly the podcast that we need to tune into and pay very close attention and take some notes and listen carefully. Rene Brent is a certified clinical hypnotherapist for 13 years. She's a director and an instructor of hypnotherapy for the past 10 years. Her website is Rene Brent hypnosis.com and her phone number is 407-497-5285, and we're going to get into it. We're going to debunk some myths, talk about some client breakthroughs, the power of words. So much more Rene, it's been so many years.

Rene Brent 0:59 Yeah, yeah, it's great to be here. Good to see you. Yeah, catching up.

Robert Plank 1:05 I'm not even sure what babies all of that. Yeah, new life. And I'm not even sure we have the technology to see each other. Last time, I think it was just audio only.

Rene Brent 1:14 It's just on the phone. Oh, my God, we've come so far. It's so interesting. And, you know, it's very interesting. I i met with you the first time on my book. How big is your butt, which was a best seller, and I personally have grown so much and learned so much personally about myself and spiritually, emotionally, all of this in the last eight years. So it's really great. I wrote another book called breaking the worry agreement, just about letting go of worry, but I'm very chill in what I'm doing now. I'm in this trust space, and it's really always my pleasure to help people like learn and grow and make changes, be the boss, like you said

Robert Plank 1:52 I love it, and I'm looking to tap into that as well. I feel like this whole personal growth thing, I don't think back then I really knew what it was, and I know I definitely didn't take it seriously. And I feel like, in general, I'm more chill since I'm older. I do have more problems and more stress, but I feel like I have better techniques, and I'm slower to act impulsively and better to sometimes say, hey, I need a break, I need a walk, I need to do some breathing. I need to just kind of do you use the tools in the toolbox to attack the problem? Even though, you know life is always have some uncertainty, unexpectedness, it's always built in, but we do our best, and so these last few We've both grown those last few years. So what is your passion and focus these days? What's new?

Rene Brent 2:37 So it was interesting. We talked a little bit before this, I came into hypnotherapy thinking that I was, I was newly divorced from a 20 year marriage, etc, etc. Thought I was going to be really helping women, and I have found over the years that I am helping men, and I'm helping men between the age of 45 and 65 why? Because they're creating success. They've worked hard, and they're not as happy as they want to be. They're not the boss that they think they should be. Right. So my passion is really helping women through men right, and helping them create their own happiness and what their expectation of themself is good is not great. Great is not enough. Is what I hear from a lot of people, men and women, and really taming down the inner critic, and using some tools, mind hacking, brain hacking, and learning to really be the boss. And that's where I'm at right now. And also I'm really helping people sleep. We would be much better world community, United States of America, if people slept and were more hydrated, to be honest. And that's my that's my really simple opinion about all of this. Is we gotta sleep. We can't create change. We can't wellness without sleep. So that's kind of where I'm at. And I'm excited about I really love what I do, and 13 years later, I'm loving what I'm doing. I'm in my 60s now, which is crazy to me, right? And I ain't stopping soon, and I'm excited about what's coming.

Robert Plank 4:04 Well, I'm excited too, and it's a great message so far, right, that we need to be thinking these through things, through need to be hydrated, we need to sleep. And I find myself putting the phone down a lot more, and I make sure to go to bed at the same time, wake up the same time, weekends and weekends. And then right after we're done here, I'm going to, going to be laying down for about half an hour, not sure if I'll sleep for a few minutes, but I'll just be focusing on my breathing, just to manage the stress. And it's, it's so simple to do, but so few people do it, and in this day and age we're living, the question is always, well, can't I just use an app? Can't I just take a pill? Can't Can I just push a button to, isn't there an app to help me sleep better, all this sort of stuff, and so, like, if someone I guess the sleep thing, it's kind of fascinating, right? Because if someone, like set has all these excuses, like, well, I, you know, I need to stay up and work, or I'm just not a good sleeper. Like, what's your advice for some. With all the usual sleep excuses.

Rene Brent 5:02 So it's very interesting that we have, we're talking about this stuff a lot more than we used to, right, which is really great. And what I love about what's happening in the last eight years, since we talked is that there's so much science that sets it down. But happiness and health is an inside job. My next book is called happiness lives in the gray. If you have black and white thinking about sleep or about yourself and who you are in the world, it ain't going to work, because you're going to hit up against it. The mind does not like absolutes, we found that during COVID, for sure, the mind isn't like so this is what I say about sleep. Sleep happens in the morning when you wake up, if you wake up in the morning and you're running an automation, an automation of not good enough, got to be great. Got to keep going. Can't stop can't look at what's going on, not present, always looking into the future. If you do that through the day and you're not the boss of your subconscious mind, then you are not going to sleep well at night. Why? Because when you put your head on a pillow, the subconscious is going to talk to you and it's going to talk to you about all the things that you screwed up in the past, or it's going to wake you up about two or three in the morning and tell you all the things you need to worry about in the future, right? This is our natural circadian rhythm, so being the boss through the day and taking time to quiet down happiness health is an inside job, and it's pretty easy, like you said, I love the fact that you said, I have to just slow down during I'm just going to slow down if you quiet your body for five minutes, four minutes, three minutes. If you do that, your brain will quiet down. Because why the neurons we have 10 times more neurons from our body to our brain than our brain to our body, so it's giving a message of settling down, a quietness, and it will still your brain. It's not like we're not going to think, but we just gotta quiet down and be safe. Then, no, we don't always have to be doing something right. We're and you've heard this before, we're a human being, not a human doing right? We just have to learn to slow down and know that those minutes that we're quiet, where we take time to just listen to what's going on in our own mind and our body when we do it, that's the superpower that's a super ingredient for success in the future.

Robert Plank 7:17 I like it. So we need to quiet down and develop these better habits, not be in such a rush all the time, don't live in the past or the future, be in the present. And so, and that's a great just message to start off with, and something to think about. And so, when and then, so then getting to, like, the bigger picture, right? These men come to you, and what you've been saying is they're like, Well, I'm unsatisfied. I've got stress six different ways, not sure. Like, what's the usual language they use? Or, like, what kind of problems do they come to you with?

Rene Brent 7:46 So my favorite word that I hear all the time is, I'm stuck. I'm stuck and I am not where I think I should be. So it's really the perception of, okay, where do you think you should be? Because where you think you should be is usually based on an old programming from back there, which is someone gave you the message that I'm not good enough that, and now you've created this own inner critic that's telling you no, no, no, keep going, keep going. So it's really about reframing the perception of where am I going and who I want to be, right? Because if you're running an automation that started when you were six, seven years old, right from a belief that you obtained from somebody else, then that's what you're filtering through, right? So it's about shifting that, but it's really about starting your day. And so stuckness is my favorite word. Let me just say this. Stuck is my favorite word that that could be another book. Stuck means that I have a part of me that is tired of running the same old crap, right? And a stuckness means to me that the load you've been carrying for so years is so heavy that it stopped. And now there's a part of you that's saying, Come on, come on. And there's a part of you that wants to stay so this push and pull, push and pull leaves you feeling stuck because you're not moving. So I think stuck is my favorite word, because that lets me know there's a part of you that wants you to change, that's fighting for you every day. So stuckness gets people to pay attention, and when you pay attention, you create change. So I love the word stuck, and I love helping people being the boss of what's going on in their inner mind, and it just, it's not as hard as you think it is. It really isn't.

Robert Plank 9:27 That's a great reframe that if you, if you know that you're stuck, if you're aware of this, that's a good thing, right? Because you're like, hey, something needs to change, and how does that change happen? We've all heard of, like, the the usual, like, you know, four to six techniques, and you could punch it in the chat GPT, you're like, Oh yeah, I heard of this and that list. But like, what actually works when someone comes to you and says, you know, I've heard of these techniques, I've read these books, I've tried these things, I still don't know what it seems like the the hypnotherapy, you say that men especially, it seems like they're they're ready. And eager to use this tool

Rene Brent 10:02 yes, hypnotherapy, which is hypnosis as a hypnotherapist, I'm not a therapist. I use hypnosis as a therapy tool, which means quiet down the brain waves. When you quiet down the brain waves, you cry. Quiet down this internal, analytical filter that drops and now we're in the room. This is why, I think men in particular, like hypnotherapy or hypnosis, because it's more impactful. You're in the room. You're creating change fast. Really, you can create neuroplastic, neuro change very quickly. In this I had a woman who just left here who's been stuck on something, she couldn't speak publicly, and she left here like she couldn't even find her fear of public speaking again. Why? Because she was in the room and she talked to the part that created the change. So when you're in the room with the issue, now you can understand that it isn't even yours. It was handed down to you by something someone said for her. It was her brother who was trying to protect her when she was seven and was speaking for her, wouldn't let her tell a story and suppressed her and now she didn't, couldn't find her words. It's incredible how it just impacts us. So when your hypnosis change in the brain wave now we're in the room, it doesn't help someone to have me reframe it now they're in the in the state of hypnosis, just means they're programmable. I actually think I don't Hypno hypnotize people. I de hypnotize people from their old programming really honestly. And when you're in the room with it, you can create change and be the boss. And it's really, really powerful to be able to do that. If people are reading books, or they're doing the apps, or they're this, and then they're not creating change, then they're hitting up against this wall. This is what I know about the subconscious mind. It always wants to be right, and it always wants to be right right now. So when you have a belief in your from the past, from long ago that says not good enough, or not worthy, or not capable, or not lovable, and you're trying to input something else it doesn't agree with, and it's hitting this wall. It's like balloons against a wall. It's not going to work. You need to drop in. And just sometimes, it's just being quiet. Now you can get in the room with it, and that's where you create change. But you you can't out think this. 5% is our conscious mind. 95% is our subconscious mind. You have to find a way to quiet down enough to be able to, like I said, get in the room.

Robert Plank 12:28 Well, this is very brilliant, and we're outmatched by our subconscious mind, right? There's just a little bit of us trying to fight this whole big thing, and it seems like we need a different approach, because the current approach is not working the brute force method. Look where it's getting us. And so I go, Are people afraid of hypnosis, or is there sort of, like, like resistance, or, like, incorrect thinking when it comes to it, when they like, explore this approach with you.

Rene Brent 12:56 This is interesting, because hypnosis really start in the medical field in the 1700s right? And then you got in the 1800s religion started, and people started getting afraid of it because they didn't have control of it, of what was going on. It was very effective in the medical community. And then stage hypnosis showed up, which kind of, in my opinion, stage hypnosis is real. It's a different it's different skill set, but it didn't show up as clinical, right? So people just like, you know it's not it, so that's what they know of hypnosis. So it's really my passion, and my strength actually is to help people understand what it is. It's only a natural change in a brain wave, right? So people do get afraid. They get afraid they're going to get stuck in hypnosis. They're going to be afraid that I'm going to have control of their mind, or they're going to say their deep, dark secrets. I have zero control over what happens in people if I my skill set, for me, is all hypnosis is self hypnosis, by the way, my skill set is building rapport. Someone is not going to go to into the state of hypnosis, a quieter state if they don't trust me. So anybody who goes to a hypnotist or hypnotherapist, the most important thing, I think, is that they have to trust them. They have to be in a space or an environment, and they have to like their voice. Actually, if you find their voice annoying, you ain't going into hypnosis, right? But most of the work, or if you have a hypnotist or hypnotherapist who's trying to tell you how to think, that's a big no bueno, because it is not going to help you, it may help you for a little time. So it's really important to trust what's going on. But all the work is really inside. All I tell people, I'm a professional garage door opener. I just really open the garage for them, which is the subconscious mind, to get into the powerful part of the brain, the 95% that holds all of their their past, experiences, their emotions. And now I hold the flashlight. I don't do it for them, but I help them. And they decide what they want to keep, what they want to let go of, what they want to fix, how they want to organize it. And then when you do that. Then life feels a little bit easier, and it's easier each time you go into the garage.

Robert Plank 15:04 So to speak, I like it, and I'm really enjoying the playful language here, right? You talk about opening the garage, you talk about the problem being in the room with you, you talk about the automation. It gives us a new perspective on looking at some of the stuff. And you know podcasting, you know how podcasts are fun with stories, and you gave us a couple of quick stories. But as far as, like, what's possible, what kind of, like, real change can happen, especially with hypnosis, and maybe sometimes, like you said, sometimes blocked since age seven, right? There's just some weird thing in the past. It's like, it's messing with us decades later. So do you have a quick, fun success story, case study of just what's possible, what sort of change can happen.

Rene Brent 15:46 I do. I have a guy. He ended up sending me almost his whole company actually, to do some work with me, because he he started seeing me once a month. This guy was super he was super stuck, and he was very successful, but not happy, and he was drinking. He was drinking way too much to try to manage it. You know, when you try to find a solution outside of you and you're overing something, overing food, over shopping, over exercising, over whatever, then you're not the boss of the behavior, right? So he really was stuck. It was causing him some health issues and some marital issues. So he came in to see me, and we just started clearing, clearing the garage. And he noticed that his belief that good is not great and great is not enough came from his athletic coaching from young right, and a father who was very you know, he parented by pointing out everything that was wrong, which was the age right. That's how fathers sometimes are taught to point out so you can do better. Their intention is to help point out what's wrong, instead of helping them what is right, and then make changes from that space of good enough. But anyway, he did some work. He talked to the part of him that just wouldn't let him settle his drinking slowed down, and he understood that when he took time to quiet down and be the boss through the day, as he slept better, as he ate better, then he wasn't he wasn't creating less success. He was creating more success. And now the people in his office wanted to be around him more. They wanted he was more positive to himself and to them. And then they started and then they just started creating all of them as it spread out. Because when we create change that goes out, that that just ripples out behavior, and the company started making more money, and the only person that was doing the work in the company was him. So he's like, if I'm creating all the success, and he said to me once, he said, Rene, I don't even recognize the person that I came in here to the first time I came to see you, he couldn't even recognize the behavior. And now he started sending me people in his office, and he started, it was really quite amazing. And that company, he ended up selling that company, and I helped him move through the cell at let's just say he's really set up for the rest of his life, and now he can really enjoy who he is, and he knows that he deserves the happiness and the success that he's created and the new relationships. It's really, it's really so fun to have a front row seat to that every day.

Robert Plank 18:25 It really is that must be a good feeling. And I think we all want this right? We want to say, Let me have this conversation, right? Let me be in the room with this problem and figure that out, and get to the point where I can change some habits, change some thinking sleep better, and just kind of like, you know, solve these little problems and sequence and then get to this other side of of just like getting rid of some bad habits and developing some good habits. And how can someone look into more of this? If someone says, Man, like a lot of the ideas Rene shared here, they sound really impressive, and I want to experience some of this hypnosis, or how big is your butt, or just what she has to teach me. What are some next steps here? What's the call to action?

Rene Brent 19:05 So people can always go to my website, Rene Brent, hypnosis.com, or if they want someone local, like I said, you have to have rapport. If they don't have at least 300 hours of training, then they probably should be doing it at least 510, years for experience, but just call someone in your local area and see, hey, this is what I want to do, and see if you if it resonates with you, right? I have my kind of clients that come see me because they resonate with my style, how I frame things, my straightforwardness. I may not everybody who who's watching me or or listening may not get me, and that's okay, but there is someone out there that has their style and their wording that's going to get them, so don't give up on it, but there, you're never going to lose control. You're never going to do it, but if it's something that resonates with you, just look into it. Local Area, or give me a call, and I'd be happy to guide someone or do a. Knee session with someone to introduce them. All of that's on my website. But what I want to leave with is the first one of the first steps is to in the morning, when you're waking up in the morning, Robert is you're already in a natural, slower brain wave, from a Delta brain wave to a beta. Used to go through this Hypno hypnagogic state. I want to encourage everybody before they open their eyes, is to pre program. Have a team meeting with your subconscious mind, because you're already there. It's a natural state. And just say, Hey, this is what I need for the day. If you're trying to eat cleaner, this is what I want to do. I want you to reduce cravings. If you have a meeting or you're public speaking, this is what I want to do. Because if you do that in the morning, and this is why they have team meetings, so everybody's on the same page. Now you've introduced yourself as the boss of the subconscious for the mind for the day, and now you're in charge. If you don't, you're in an emotional Groundhog Day, and you're starting the day feet on the floor, and you're inserting the same crap from the day before. That's what we do. We predict our future based on our past. So if you pre program in the morning before you open your eyes, you're already shifting your day.

Robert Plank 21:05 That's wonderful. And I'll start doing that first thing tomorrow with when I wake up, opening before opening my eyes, I'll say, hey, it's a team meeting. I'm the boss here's and so I need to think this afternoon about what I'll be asking for because, like, I'm as you're saying, that I'm like, I don't even, I mean, what a concept. I don't even know what I'm asking for. So it seems like that's the first step. And then ask for it. And I imagine that it's not overnight, instant success, right? It might be. It might take several repetitions to get this to work.

Rene Brent 21:37 Pre programming takes some training. You feel a little stupid doing it. This is what I just saw you do. You tried to think with the 5% about what your 95% is going to do. You don't need to do that when you when you turn over and you lay on your back to pre program your your subconscious mind is going to let you know what you need to program. You don't have to think about it before trust the 95% it's really powerful. It's your superpower. So why not use all of our brain? But you don't have to out think it. You don't have to analyze it. Just do it.

Robert Plank 22:07 I like it. They call that delegating, right? They call that leadership. And it's not just outside, it's inside. It's an inside job, as you say. So and so the next logical step here is to go to R, E, N, E, B, R, E, N, T hypnosis.com that's Rene Brent hypnosis, where you can find out about those online sessions, schedule the appointment, know your mind, change your life. Phone Number was 407-497-5285, find out about those hypnosis services, what to expect and more about Rene, including her excellent books, and that upcoming book that you said you had the idea for that you're working on coming soon, coming someday. And before I let you go here, Rene, it's time for the scary part of the show where I try to stump you, I try to put you on the spot, and I ask for a fun quote or lesson that has served you in life or in business, as our way of having a fun ending to the show. So what comes to mind as far as a fun quote or lesson?

Rene Brent 23:04 So this is so this is easy, and I don't it's anonymous. I think I don't know who, and people can write me and tell me if they know it. But my favorite quote that's really served me as a public speaker, as an international public speaker, really, as a writer, is your opinion of me is none of my business. I like your opinion of me. Why? Because everybody is filtering through their past and their own beliefs. So anything you say to someone is distorted based on their whole past experience. That has nothing to do with me. So if you live your life that people are going to like you or they're not going to like you, it has nothing to do with you. So just live your life, do the best you can enjoy, be and just and be happy.

Robert Plank 23:47 Great advice. It's nothing to do with you. Have that mental and emotional freedom, especially as we go to Rene Brent hypnosis.com, check it out. You'll love it. And thank you, Rene. Let's not win another eight years before catching up again. It's been a blast. We learned a lot. Yeah, let's do it again soon.

Rene Brent 24:04 Thank you great being here.
